TurboTax Desktop vs TurboTax Online: Which Should You Buy?
Desktop if you file several returns or want forms mode and a local file; Online if you file one return, want to start free or hand it to an expert. Built from Intuit's product pages and community answers.
TurboTax Desktop vs TurboTax Online: which should I buy?
Buy TurboTax Desktop if you prepare more than one return or want the return file kept on your own computer: Intuit says each personal desktop edition includes 5 federal e-files and 1 state download, with state e-file sold separately (checked October 2026). Choose TurboTax Online if you file a single return, want to start without paying, may fit the Free Edition, or want an Intuit expert to help or take over. The deciding factors are how many returns you file, where the file lives and when you pay.
This comparison is built from Intuit's TurboTax Desktop and Online product pages and their disclosures, a long-running thread in Intuit's TurboTax community and an IRS tax tip on Free File, rather than first-hand use. This is general information, not tax advice, and Intuit's own pages remain the authority on what each product includes.

Desktop: built for households that file several returns
The strongest reason to buy the download is volume. Intuit's desktop disclosures state: "TurboTax Desktop Products: Price includes tax preparation and printing of federal tax returns and free federal e-file of up to 5 federal tax returns." Each personal edition's card repeats "Includes 5 federal e-files Includes 1 state download State e-file sold separately". A parent who files for two adult children and a grandparent is the classic case: one purchase, several returns. The community thread puts it the way buyers do: "The Desktop CD/Download program can do unlimited returns and you can efile 5 federal for free". Intuit adds one limit in the same disclosures: "Not for use by paid preparers."
The second reason is forms mode. The Intuit product pages quoted here do not describe it, but the thread's best answer, posted by a community member in June 2019, says: "You can see and enter directly into the actual forms. Desktop has a What-If worksheet. Your return is kept on your own computer so you will always have access to it in the future like if you need a copy or need to amend it." A December 2020 reply notes that community "Champs", "none of whom are Intuit Employees", recommend Desktop for returns that are more than "simple", and calls the ability "to switch to a view of the tax forms themselves as they are filled in and calculations are made" a "truly major and valuable feature of the desktop program." If you like to check a schedule by eye before filing, that is the version to get.
The third reason is local data. Intuit's page says "Product download, installation and activation requires an Intuit Account and internet connection" and "Software updates and optional online features require internet connection," so you still need a login and a connection to install and update, but the return file itself sits on your machine.
The constraints are real. Intuit is explicit that "Operating systems required : Windows 11 (64-bit), macOS Sonoma 14 or later. Software will not install on Windows 10, macOS 13 or earlier operating systems." The license is "limited to one account per license code," and "Desktop add-on products and services purchased are non-refundable." Mac users lose some imports: "Quicken and QuickBooks import not available with TurboTax installed on a Mac." Expert help is a paid add-on called Live Tax Advice, which offers "Access to tax experts to obtain answers to tax questions and to assist with tax year 2025 return(s) prepared with TurboTax Desktop software."
Desktop comes in three personal editions. Intuit's compare page labels Deluxe "Recommended for: Maximizing your deductions", Premier "Recommended for: Investments & rental property" and Home & Business "Recommended for: Personal & Self-Employed"; Home & Business also lets you "Create and e-file W-2 s and 1099 s for employees and contractors using Quick Employer Forms". The community thread adds that "you can use a lower version because all the Desktop programs have all the same forms," so, by that account, the tiers differ in guidance rather than in which forms exist. For entities, Intuit says "For partnerships, S Corp, C Corp, multi-member LLC, trusts and estates, TurboTax Business has you covered."
Online: one return, pay at the end, a free tier and expert options
TurboTax Online works the other way round: start now, pay when you file. The product page says "Start for free Pay only when you file" and "State additional for paid products", and the disclosures explain that "you may start using the tax preparation features without paying upfront, and pay only when you are ready to e-file, print, file by mail, or purchase add-on products or services." The final price is set at the end: "Actual prices for paid versions are determined based on the version you use and the date and/or time you print or e-file, and are subject to change without notice."
The Free Edition exists only online. Intuit's wording: "TurboTax Free Edition ($0 Federal + $0 State + $0 To File) is available for those filing simple Form 1040 returns only (no forms or schedules except as needed to claim the Earned Income Tax Credit, Child Tax Credit, student loan interest, and Schedule 1-A)." The page adds that "Roughly 37% of taxpayers are eligible." What is not simple, in Intuit's own list: "Itemized deductions claimed on Schedule A," "Unemployment income reported on a 1099-G," "Business or 1099-NEC income," "Stock sales (including crypto investments)" and "Income from rental property or property sales." Those situations move you to a paid tier such as Do It Yourself Deluxe or Premium, whose names differ from the desktop Premier and Home & Business.
Online also owns the expert options. Intuit's comparison of filing options reads: "Do It Yourself File yourself with guided software Expert Assist File yourself with on-demand expert help Expert Full Service A dedicated expert files for you, from start to finish". With Full Service, "An Intuit tax expert matched to your situation will fully handle your taxes for you, from start to finish, and online or in-person." The desktop add-on answers questions; it does not take the return off your hands.
Two online limits come from the 2019 community answer: "Online web version is only good for 1 return, federal and state are separate charges," and "You can not see the forms until you pay and print them out." The same answer warned that "Online returns are stored online and after Oct each year you might not have access to it." Intuit's current page is more generous: with the paid online tiers "you can make changes to your 2025 tax return online through October 31, 2028," and "Access to up to seven years of tax returns we have on file for you is available through December 31, 2026." Downloading a PDF copy each year is still sensible.
Price: what Intuit's pages do and do not show
Intuit does not print a fixed price for its paid desktop or online editions in the text of these pages. The online page asks you to "select all that apply" before it will "Find my price", and the desktop disclosures note that "strikethrough prices reflect anticipated late-season pricing (4/1–10/31; for S-corps & partnerships, 5/1–10/31)." So this page prints no paid TurboTax prices. The pricing logic is still clear: Desktop is one purchase covering up to 5 federal e-files with a state download included, while Online charges per return with state additional.
The two TurboTax links on this page go to Amazon listings. The download is TurboTax Deluxe Desktop Edition 2025, the edition Intuit recommends for "Maximizing your deductions"; check price on Amazon. The online version Amazon sells is TurboTax Deluxe Online 2025, Federal Tax Return [Online Code] & McAfee Total Protection, an online-tier code bundled with antivirus; check price on Amazon. Our review of that McAfee bundle covers when the extra software is worth having, and our TurboTax review covers the product line as a whole.
Which to buy, by situation
- You file for yourself and one or two relatives: Desktop. The 5 federal e-files and the included state download are the whole argument, and the file stays on your machine.
- You want to see every form before filing, or test scenarios: Desktop, for forms mode and the What-If worksheet the community describes.
- You have a simple return and want to pay nothing: Online Free Edition, if you fit Intuit's simple-return definition, which includes Schedule 1-A.
- You want to start without a card and decide later: Online, because payment comes "only when you are ready to e-file, print, file by mail".
- You want someone else to prepare and sign: Online Expert Full Service, where Intuit's comparison says "Expert signs and files return for you".
- Your computer runs Windows 10 or an older macOS: Online, because the current desktop software "will not install on Windows 10, macOS 13 or earlier operating systems."
- You file a partnership, S corp, C corp or trust return yourself: TurboTax Business on desktop, which Intuit lists with "Includes 5 federal e-files State download sold separately".

If your income is modest, the IRS route costs nothing: "Taxpayers who earned less than $89,000 in 2025 can use Free File guided tax software to prepare and electronically file their 2025 federal income tax returns for free. All taxpayers can use Free File Fillable Forms regardless of income level."
