Above-the-Line Deduction

An above-the-line deduction reduces your gross income to arrive at adjusted gross income (AGI) and can be claimed whether or not you itemize. Common examples include certain retirement contributions, the self-employed health insurance deduction, and student loan interest. A lower AGI can expand other tax benefits.
