Frequently Asked Questions
- Which states have no income tax?
- Nine states levy no broad-based income tax on wages: Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, and Wyoming. Two caveats: Washington taxes long-term capital gains above roughly $270,000 at 7%, and New Hampshire taxed interest and dividends until that tax was fully repealed effective 2025.
- What is the difference between a flat tax and graduated brackets?
- A flat-tax state (like Pennsylvania at 3.07% or Arizona at 2.5%) charges one rate on all taxable income. A graduated state (like California or New York) splits income into brackets, so only the dollars inside each bracket are taxed at that bracket’s rate — your top "marginal" rate applies only to your last dollars earned, not your whole income.
- Do these calculators include local or city income taxes?
- No. Several states allow significant local income taxes — New York City adds roughly 3.1%–3.9%, Maryland counties add 2.25%–3.2%, and most Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Indiana municipalities add 1%–3%. Where a local tax is common we flag it in the state’s note, but the estimate covers state-level tax only.
- Which tax year do these brackets cover?
- These are 2025 tax-year brackets — the numbers you use for the return you file in the 2026 filing season (verified 2026-06). States adjust brackets annually for inflation, and several states have rate cuts phasing in, so always confirm against your state revenue department before filing.
