Child Tax Credit 2026: Eligibility and How to Maximize It

The Child Tax Credit (CTC) provides up to $2,000 per qualifying child under age 17 โ€” a direct reduction in your tax liability, not just a deduction from income. For families with multiple children, this credit can eliminate thousands of dollars in tax. Here is what you need to know to claim it correctly.

The $1,700 refundable portion (Additional Child Tax Credit) means that even if you owe less than $2,000 in taxes, you can receive up to $1,700 per child as a refund.

Who Qualifies as a Qualifying Child?

Your child must meet all six tests:

Age: Under age 17 at the end of the tax year.

Relationship: Your child, stepchild, adopted child, sibling, half-sibling, or a descendant of any of these.

Residency: Must have lived with you for more than half the tax year.

Support: The child cannot have provided more than half of their own support for the year.

Dependency: The child must be claimed as your dependent.

Social Security Number: The child must have a valid SSN. Children with an ITIN or ATIN do not qualify for the $2,000 CTC but may qualify for the $500 Other Dependent Credit.

Income Phase-Out

The credit begins to phase out for higher-income taxpayers:

Filing StatusPhase-Out Begins
Single$200,000 AGI
Married Filing Jointly$400,000 AGI
Head of Household$200,000 AGI

The credit reduces by $50 for every $1,000 (or fraction thereof) of AGI above the threshold.

Other Dependent Credit

The $500 Other Dependent Credit applies to dependents who do not qualify for the full CTC:

  • Children age 17 or older who are your dependents
  • Full-time students under 24 you claim as dependents
  • Parents or other relatives you claim as dependents
  • Qualifying relatives with a valid SSN or ITIN

This credit is non-refundable (cannot reduce your tax below zero) and also phases out at $200,000/$400,000.

How to Claim It

The Child Tax Credit is claimed directly on Form 1040 (Line 19). Schedule 8812 is required to claim the Additional Child Tax Credit (refundable portion) and the Other Dependent Credit.

Most tax software calculates this automatically based on the dependents you enter.

Divorced and Separated Parents

Only one parent can claim a child as a dependent in any given year. The rules for which parent qualifies default to the custodial parent (the one with whom the child lived more nights during the year). The custodial parent can release the claim to the non-custodial parent using Form 8332 โ€” a common arrangement in divorce agreements.

Year-Round Planning: The W-4

If you expect to claim the Child Tax Credit, update your Form W-4 with your employer to reflect your credits. This adjusts withholding downward so you receive the tax benefit throughout the year rather than as a lump-sum refund at filing โ€” a cash flow improvement.
