For a simple W-2 return, TaxAct is the cheapest paid option; for freelancers and investors, H&R Block usually saves the most versus TurboTax's premium pricing; TurboTax wins only if you value the slickest interface and largest support network. All three are accurate and IRS-compliant — the real difference in 2026 is price at the self-employed and investment tiers, where TurboTax can cost 2–3x more than H&R Block for nearly identical functionality.

Free Tier Limitations

The "free" tiers are narrow. TurboTax Free and TaxAct Free cover only simple W-2 returns (standard deduction, limited credits) and exclude itemizing, HSA, or investment income. H&R Block's free tier is the most generous, covering more credits and free state filing for qualifying simple returns. If you have a 1099, brokerage 1099-B, or want to itemize, all three push you to a paid tier.

Which Wins by Filer Type

  • W-2 only, standard deduction: Use a free tier or TaxAct Deluxe (~$30) if you have minor complexity. No reason to pay TurboTax prices.
  • Freelancer / 1099 / Schedule C: H&R Block Self-Employed (~$85) is the value pick — same Schedule C handling and expense import as TurboTax for far less. The boxed H&R Block Deluxe + State 2025 (~$49.97) is even cheaper if your self-employment is light.
  • Investor (1099-B, crypto, rental): TurboTax has the smoothest brokerage import, but H&R Block handles the same forms for less. If you have a desktop preference, TurboTax Deluxe Online 2025 (~$100.99, bundled with security software) is a turnkey option.

Accuracy & Audit Support

All three carry a maximum-refund and accuracy guarantee (TaxAct adds up to $100,000 in software-error reimbursement). The differentiator is audit help: H&R Block uniquely offers in-person support at physical offices, valuable if you ever face an audit. TurboTax and TaxAct provide audit guidance as paid add-ons.

If you want to understand the deductions before you file, Lower Your Taxes - BIG TIME! ($12.70) and J.K. Lasser's Your Income Tax 2026 ($21.30) are the two references most worth owning. Self-employed filers should add 475 Tax Deductions for All Small Businesses (~$22.95).

FAQ

Is the most expensive software the most accurate? No. All three compute identical tax math from your inputs. You pay TurboTax more for interface polish and brand, not better numbers.

Can I switch software year to year? Yes. Each platform can import a PDF of last year's return from a competitor, so switching to save money is low-friction.

Which is best for crypto? All three now handle crypto via CSV import; TurboTax has the most integrations, but H&R Block covers the same scenarios for less.
